イギリス人アーティスト、デイヴィッド・ホックニー（David Hockney）の作品集。2026年3月から8月にかけてロンドンのギャラリー「サーペンタイン・ノース（Serpentine North）」で開催された展覧会に伴い刊行された。全長90メートルにおよぶ巨大なフリーズ（横長に連続する帯状の大作）「ノルマンディでの1年（A Year in Normandie）」と近年の絵画作品を収録し、生涯を通して追い求めてきた「ささやかな美」への賛歌を一冊にまとめている。
本書は、作者の多様な表現に触れる機会を読者に提供する。バイユーのタペストリーに着想を得たフリーズ作品に加え、新作絵画10点、肖像画5点、静物画5点を収録。時間、遠近法、美術史との対話を重ねながら変化を続ける制作をたどるとともに、「両目で見ること」、そして絵画が我々の世界の捉え方をいかに形づくるのかを改めて考えるよう促す、一貫したメッセージを映し出している。
あわせて、美術史と文学の分野から寄せられた新たな視点を通して、この個展のために制作された「ノルマンディでの1年」（2020–2021年）と最新の絵画シリーズを考察する。作者によるテキストに加え、美術史家でありキュレーターのマルコ・リヴィングストン（Marco Livingstone）、作家のオリヴィア・レイン（Olivia Laing）によるエッセイを収録するほか、同ギャラリーのアーティスティック・ディレクターであるハンス・ウルリッヒ・オブリスト（Hans Ulrich Obrist）の詳細なインタビューも掲載。
展示風景とともに、展示されたすべての作品を細部までカラー図版で紹介。色彩と構図に対する作者の繊細な感覚を伝えている一冊である。
To accompany the exhibition A Year in Normandie and Some Other Thoughts about Painting at Serpentine North (12 March – 23 August 2026), Serpentine has co-published a catalogue with Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz Konig, Köln.
Bringing together David Hockney's monumental 90-metre frieze and some of his most recent paintings, this book captures Hockney's lifelong celebration of simple beauty.
"A Year in Normandie and Some Other Thoughts about Painting" invites readers to encounter David Hockney's different modes of expression. In addition to his monumental frieze, inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, ten new paintings, five portraits and five still lifes, trace the artist's evolving dialogue with time, perspective and art history, reflecting his enduring call to look with both eyes and reconsider how painting can shape our experience of the world.
It brings together new and insightful contributions from the fields of art history and literature to reflect on David Hockney’s monumental frieze A Year in Normandie (2020-21) and his latest series of paintings, created for his solo exhibition at Serpentine. Generously illustrated in colour throughout, it features essays by David Hockney; art historian and curator Marco Livingstone; and writer Olivia Laing; as well as an in-depth interview with Serpentine Artistic Director Hans Ulrich Obrist.
Alongside installation views of the exhibition at Serpentine North, all paintings in the exhibition are featured in detail, emphasising the artist’s sensitivity to colour and composition.
