オランダ出身、パリを拠点に活動するフォトグラファー、ウィンター・ヴァンデンブリンク（Winter Vandenbrink）の作品集。

本書は、2024年刊行の『VANDALS』、同年後半に刊行された『TOBY』に続く、イギリスの出版社「IDEA」から出版される作者の3冊目の作品集である。

判型は33 × 24cm。グラフィックデザイン界のレジェンドであるリンダ・ファン・ドゥールセン（Linda van Deursen）がアートディレクションを手がけた大型本であり、同出版社がこれまでに制作した書籍のなかでも、物理的な造本として最も意欲的な一冊となっている。その複雑さゆえに、あるイタリアの印刷会社からは「不可能だ」と告げられたという。異なる用紙が組み合わされ、断裁されていない折丁が綴じ込まれ、本体は折り畳まれたポスターの内部に接着されている。この発想を生み出し、実際に形にできたのはオランダ人ならではかもしれない。本書の印刷・製本は、オランダ・アメルスフォールトの「Wilco Art Books」が担当した。

本書で作者が見つめるのは、パリ、ヴェネツィア、アムステルダム、ミラノの街を群れをなして行き交う思春期の若者たちである。被写体それぞれを固有の存在として捉えながらも、互いに密接な関係性のなかにある集団として描き出し、彼らを「狼の群れ」として提示している。巻末に収録されたエリオット・ホーワース（Eliot Haworth）によるテキスト「Field Notes」では、狼の行動に関するリサーチが、思春期の若者と動物の双方に重ね合わせて読むことのできる両義的な語り口によって綴られている。

「一般的に、冬には毛足の長い大きなコートをまとい、夏になるとその装いは軽やかになる。最も寒い日も暑い日も、彼らは屋外で他者と交わっているときに最も幸福そうだ。髪型は様々である。まっすぐな髪もあれば、束になったもの、立ち上がったもの、短く弾力を感じさせるものもある。肩を越えて流れるほど長い髪も見られる。色は黒、金、茶、赤、橙、銀と多様である。ときには毛先だけを濃い色に染めた、魅力的なツートーンも見受けられる。」

視線、身振り、そして動きのなかから、作者は10代の若者たちの連帯感を捉えている。こうした集団の姿を、広告やエディトリアルの仕事では演出を加えながら撮影してきたが、本書に収められた写真はすべて無作為に生まれたものである。164ページに亘り、演出されていない日常の瞬間が記録されている。

「ただ、被写体となる若者たちに自分の存在を見せるべきかどうかについては考えました。最初の頃は、かなり離れた場所から気づかれないように撮影していましたが、次第にそれが少し不誠実に感じられるようになったのです。そこで少しずつ距離を縮めていきました。今では出来事の真ん中に立つか、少なくとも彼らが私に気づき、望めば話しかけられる場所にいることを好んでいます。」

The new IDEA book is WOLVES by WINTER VANDENBRINK. It is the third book by the Dutch born, Paris based photographer to be published by IDEA, the first of course being VANDALS from 2024 and the second TOBY from later that same year. At 33 x 24cm, WOLVES is a big book art directed by graphic design legend Linda van Deursen, and easily the most exciting physical book production ever undertaken at IDEA, so much that one Italian printer told us it was ‘impossibile’ to make. There are different paper stocks, untrimmed sections sewn in, and the book block is glued into a folded poster. Only the Dutch could come up with it - and actually make it. The book was printed and bound by Wilco Art Books in Amersfoort in the Netherlands.

Winter presents his subjects in unique detail but also in close interaction with each other - for this book, we are looking at the adolescents as ‘wolf packs’, roaming the streets of Paris, Venice, Amsterdam or Milan. Eliot Haworth’s brilliant contribution ‘Field Notes’, included at the back of the book, presents his research on wolf behaviour in an ambiguous tone so that it applies to both adolescents and animals simultaneously:

“As a rule, they tend to wear large shaggy coats in the winter, which lighten up in the summer months. Even in the very coldest or hottest weather, they are happiest when mingling outside. Their hairstyles vary. Some wear it straight, or in tufts, or crests, or short and with an elastic springiness. Some hair is exceptionally long and runs down past the shoulders. It can be black or blonde, or brown or red or orange or silver. Sometimes it’s a fetching two-tone, with the tips tinted a darker colour.”

Through glances, gestures and movements Winter captures the togetherness of teenage groups. He stages photos like this expertly for advertising and editorial too, but WOLVES is unscripted; 164 pages of the actual in-between.

“I did have to think about whether the subjects of the photos should see me, though. In the beginning I shot undetected from very far away, but that started to feel a bit dishonest. So I moved in closer and closer. Now I like to stand in the middle of the action, or at least in a spot where the young people can see me and approach me if they want.”
