11年に亘り続けられた作者のプロジェクト「Seat Assignment」を包括的に紹介する初の書籍。作者は、飛行機に搭乗するたびに、機内で手に入るものだけを使って作品を制作し、その成果を携帯電話のカメラで記録してきた。

機内食のスナックや機内誌、セーターの毛玉、自身の指や衣服、あるいは読書灯の光までも素材として用い、トレーテーブルや膝の上、ときには機内の化粧室を舞台に作品を制作。便座カバーやペーパータオルを身にまとったセルフポートレートは、15世紀フランドル絵画の肖像画を思わせる人物像へと変貌を遂げる。

年代順に収録された数百点におよぶカラー図版は、作者が試行錯誤と即興を繰り返しながら制作を続けた11年間の軌跡を辿るとともに、遊びと厳密さの双方に真摯に取り組む姿勢が、思いがけず美しく独創的な成果を生み出すことを示している。

Seat Assignment is the first book to capture the astonishing breath and complexity of artist Nina Katchadourian’s eleven-year long project by that name, in which she made art on every flight she took using only the materials she found around her, documenting the results with her phone’s camera. Using things like snacks, the in-flight magazine, sweater lint, her own fingers, her clothing, or even just the glare of the overhead reading light, Katchadourian creates artworks on her tray table, in her lap, and even in the airplane lavatory, where tissue paper seat covers and paper towels transform her into characters that recall 15th-century Flemish portraits.

The hundreds of color photographs in this book, arranged chronologically, show her process of persistent experimentation and improvisation and reveal how a commitment to play and rigor in combination can produce unexpectedly beautiful and ingenious results.
