こうした建築の記録は、果たして中立的であり得るのか。本書の著者であり日本建築の研究者であるアリ・セリグマン（Ari Seligmann）は、戦後における日本の建築写真の展開を手がかりに、イメージを通じた世界認識における普遍性と文化的固有性の双方について考察する。精緻に印刷された図版群を通して、建築写真が単なる建築家や雑誌のための商業的イメージでも、純粋な歴史記録でもないことを示している。
