本書は作者のマニフェスト、家族史、よりよく生きるための覚え書きを編み合わせた語りで構成されている。2019年に刊行されたオリジナルのスペイン語版『Lo esencial』は高い評価を得ており、本書においては翻訳やエッセイの領域で受賞歴のあるアメリカ人編集者のヴァレリー・マイルズ（Valerie Miles）が英訳を担当した。
