本書は、マサチューセッツ州ケープコッドで撮影された、静謐で瞑想的なカラー写真からなる作者の代表作の復刻版である。1978年に「ボストン美術館（Museum of Fine Arts, Boston）」での展覧会に伴い、「New York Graphic Society」と「Little, Brown and Company」より初版が刊行され、1979年初頭に本格的な流通が始まって以来、20世紀後半を代表する最も影響力のある写真集のひとつとして広く支持され、カラー写真の可能性を切り拓くとともに、写真が芸術表現として認められていくうえでも重要な役割を果たした。2002年に増補版として「Bulfinch Press」、2015年に「APERTURE」のリマスター版刊行を経て、初版発売から約50年を経た今、再び「APERTURE」よりこの名作が新たに復刊される。
