アメリカの5名のアクション・ペインターに焦点を当てた作品集。1979年9月から10月にかけてニューヨークの「ペース・ギャラリー（PACE GALLERY）」で開催された展覧会に伴い刊行された。

アメリカの「抽象表現主義」、殊に「アクション・ペインティング」の描写を代表する5人の作家陣、ウィレム・デ・クーニング（Willem de Kooning）、フランツ・クライン（Franz Kline）、リー・クラスナー（Lee Krasner）、ロバート・マザーウェル（Robert Motherwell）、ジャクソン・ポロック（Jackson Pollock）が本展に参加、それぞれの作品が収録されている。作品は綴じられず、それぞれがシートとして独立した形でフォルダーに収められている。

1952年に「アクション・ペインティング」を論文上で概念的に定義した美術批評家のハロルド・ローゼンバーグ（Harold Rosenberg）が寄港したテキスト『The American Action Painters』が印刷されている茶色いシートもあわせて封入されている。

This folio was published on the occasion of the exhibition 5 Action Painters of the ’50s, held September 21 – October 13, 1979, at Pace in New York. Works by Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Lee Krasner, Robert Motherwell, and Jackson Pollock are presented in individual folios, wrapped by a brown sheet of paper printed with “The American Action Painters” by Harold Rosenberg.
