ドイツ人フォトグラファー、ミヒャエル・シュミット（Michael Schmidt）の作品集。ドイツを代表する写真家の一人であり、「デュッセルドルフ・スクール・オブ・フォトグラフィー（The Dusseldorf School of Photography）」のメンバーでもある。1945年にベルリンに生まれ、2014年に惜しまれつつこの世を去った作者は、生涯ベルリンと「近代史におけるドイツのアイデンティティの重み」というテーマを中心に制作に取り組んできた。1965年に作者は西ベルリンの街並みや建物、人物を「セミ･ドキュメンタリー」のスタイルで撮影し始め、以後野心的な作品を全てモノクロ写真で制作し、その存在感を世に印象付けていった。

ベルリンの壁を題材とした作品集並びに展覧会『Waffenruhe』（休戦）に続き、本作は「U-ni-ty （団結）」の問題に取り組んでいる。作者は、個人と国家の団結、あるいは統一を探求しており、矛盾や相関性を見出している。作者の作品では、ファウンド・イメージや自作のイメージが混ざり合い、現実と想像が融合し、連想と感情が密に織りなした構造を作り上げている。

本書のオリジナル版は、1996年の「ニューヨーク近代美術館（MoMa）」での展覧会、ハノーファーの「シュプレンゲル美術館（Sprengel Museum）」、ドレスデンの「アルベルティヌム（Albertinium）」などでの巡回展、また、同年にロンドンの「フォトグラファーズ・ギャラリー（Photographer’s Gallery）」で開催された回顧展に伴い、同年に「SCALO」から刊行。

本作は、2022年に復刻版（第二版）として出版されたものであり、タイトルも『U-NI-TY』のドイツ語『EIN-HEIT』を用いたドイツ語版である。

Michael Schmidt, born in Berlin in 1945, is one of Germany’s greatest photographers. Following his “Ceasefire” project in 1987 (book and international touring exhibition), he addresses the question of “U-ni-ty” in this book. He traces the symbolism and iconography of political systems, their propaganda and the images of humankind they project. He explores unity, or one-ness, of individual and state, seeking out the discrepancies and the correlations. In his work he mixes found images with those of his own making to the point where reality and imagination merge, creating a densely woven structure of associations and emotions.

The book 'EIN-HEIT' (also published as English edition, named 'U-NI-TY') was published to coincide with an exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1996 and a tour to such venues as the Sprengel Museum in Hanover and the Albertinium in Dresden, as well as a 1996 retrospective show of his work at the Photographer's Gallery in London."
