EQUIVALENT by Keiko Sasaoka

Equivalent, a photobook by Japanese photographer Keiko Sasaoka, gathers her ongoing series of landscapes, begun at the start of her career. First shown as Study in her debut solo exhibition in 2001, the series has continued under shifting titles, Limit, Sightseeing, and Waters, as a sustained inquiry into the borderlands between nature and culture. Sasaoka walks Japan's coastlines and ridgelines, from Cape Hedo to Cape Nosappu. Yet this is no search for an untouched utopia. In a world already saturated with photographic images, she knows no place remains unseen. As with her earlier series Park City, set in Hiroshima, her conviction is that photographing and looking can itself become a new experience. For viewers who know the world through photographs, the book itself becomes a new hidden place.
