Photographer Harley Weir and fashion designer Dilara Findikoglu have joined forces for WITCH, a photo book bringing together powerful women and real witches to explore the relationship between femininity, nature, spirituality and rebellion. It asks: What does the word ‘Witch’ mean today?

Rooted in Romania’s traditions of folk magic and mythology, the book challenges the historical misinterpretation of witchcraft. The witch became a figure of fear, embodying everything that patriarchal society sought to control. Similarly, women who challenged social expectations or refused to conform have been marginalised and persecuted. WITCH reclaims this vilified narrative as a symbol of defiance and knowledge, it celebrates women who embrace their identities and feminine power.

Travelling across eight cities and villages over five days, Weir and Findikoglu are in discussion with a diverse spectrum of women. Delving into the limitless power of being a woman and the importance of regaining our spirituality and sacred connection with nature. The natural power and energy all women possess inside of themselves, just waiting to be invoked.

“We photographed real witches, and powerful women on a journey across Romania. For centuries, the witch has been used as a symbol of evil. But maybe she was never scary because she was evil, maybe she was scary because she was free. Across history, women who were outspoken, independent, sexual, knowledgeable, or simply unwilling to conform have been treated as dangerous. The witch became a name for the woman who could not, or would not, be controlled.

Dilara Findikoglu’s clothes become part of this story. Her designs embrace femininity without making it obedient. The body as a place of rebellion, desire and self-expression. The clothes feel protective and provocative at once, allowing these women to inhabit the witch not as a caricature of evil, but as a symbol of power, freedom and refusal.

Among the women we photographed were Mihaela Minca and her daughters. Known locally and worldwide as the most powerful witches alive. In them, the witch is not a myth but a lived reality, a way of being rooted in nature, tradition, and feminine knowledge outside institutional power.

This zine is a celebration of women, the complicated, the powerful, the unruly, the tender, the strange and the unapologetic. Women. Witches.” - Harley Weir

“The word witch has long been used to marginalise a form of power and wisdom associated with women. By linking the feminine relationship with nature and the unseen, society transformed what it could not understand into something to fear.

For centuries, patriarchal thinking has placed logic, reason and control above intuition, emotion and instinct. Yet these are equally valuable forms of knowledge, each essential to our understanding of existence. The wisdom associated with the feminine is not something mystical or extraordinary, but something deeply rooted in our bodies, our connection to nature and the knowledge we carry within us.

Through this book, we wanted to explore and celebrate the beauty of this often overlooked wisdom. To question the boundaries between the rational and the unseen, and to recognise the power that exists beyond what we have been taught to understand as truth.

Having Eastern European roots myself, travelling through Romania and meeting the women there felt strangely familiar. There was something beautiful about the land and its people, and a sense that the ancient knowledge and traditions we had come to explore were still very much alive.” - Dilara Findikoglu

Harley’s visceral direction paired with Dilara’s evocative garments through the lens of the modern woman in her spiritual landscape. Embodying tradition, legacy and our somewhat lost divine connection with nature.

An entrancing marriage between traditional dress and couture, this series of photographs and interviews tell a generational story of the evolution of witchcraft and womanhood today. Redefining a draconian history composed by the male perspective.
