アメリカ先住民シチャング・ラコタ族出身のアーティスト、ディヤニ・ホワイトホーク（Dyani White Hawk）の作品集。

本書は、アメリカ合衆国ミネソタ州ミネアポリスの美術館「ウォーカー・アート・センター（Walker Art Center）」で2025年10月から2026年2月まで開催され、その後カナダ・サスカトゥーンの現代美術館「レメイ・モダン（Remai Modern）」で2026年4月から同年10月まで開催される展覧会「Dyani White Hawk: Love Language」に伴い刊行された。

ヤマアラシの針を染色し加工して布・皮・木などに縫い付けたり編んだりする、北米先住民族の伝統的な装飾技法であるクイルワークやビーズワークを組み込み、巨大な幾何学絵画やインスタレーションを制作してきた、北アメリカの大平原地帯に暮らしてきた先住民ラコタのアーティストである作者の中期キャリアを記録する本書。
世代を超えて受け継がれてきた知識を基盤に、作者の作品は、人と人、過去と現在、大地と天空といったさまざまな結びつきを中心に据えている。ラコタの造形やモチーフを前面に押し出すことで、抽象芸術をめぐる既存の物語に新たな視点を投げかけている。本書は、15年にわたる作者の活動を、新たな論考とともに、ペインティング、彫刻、映像、紙作品など多様なメディアにわたり紹介する。

クイルワーク、レーンステッチによるビーズワーク、絵画を組み合わせた初期作品を起点として、作者は自身のシチャング・ラコタ（Sičáŋǧu Lakota）とヨーロッパ系アメリカ人の血筋をもとにした造形要素を検証し、分解し、再構成することで、抽象絵画の歴史との対話を積極的に試みている。ほかの作品では、伝統的な技法と大規模なスケールを組み合わせ、形式的・素材的な実験への継続的な取り組みを際立たせている。

本書には、近年の主要作品群が収められており、壮大な《Wopila | Lineage》シリーズのペインティングから、機で織られたビーズを用いて制作された巨大な円柱状の新作彫刻シリーズまで、多様なパターンと色彩がめまぐるしく織りなす作品が紹介されている。これらの輝く表面は、高度な技術を持つスタジオのビーズワーカーとの協働によって生み出されたものであり、素材の構造と文化的・歴史的背景の両面から精緻な観察を誘う。

Rooted in intergenerational knowledge, the art of Dyani White Hawk centers on connection—between one another, past and present, earth and sky. By foregrounding Lakota forms and motifs, she challenges prevailing narratives surrounding abstract art. Accompanying White Hawk's major mid-career survey exhibition, this publication gathers new scholarship examining 15 years of the artist's work across multimedia paintings, sculpture, video, works on paper and more.

Opening with early pieces that combine quillwork, lane stitch beadwork and painting, the artist examines, dissects and reassembles elements of her own Sicángu Lakota and European American ancestries, putting these in active conversation with histories of abstract painting. In other works, she marries traditional techniques with outsize scale, highlighting her ongoing commitment to formal and material experimentation.

The book features a new group of these works, from her monumental Wopila | Lineage paintings to a new series of towering columnar sculptures made from loomed beads, assembled in dizzying arrays of pattern and color.

Made in collaboration with a skilled team of studio beadworkers, these shimmering surfaces invite close inspection of both their material construction and their cultural and historical underpinnings.
