イギリスの出版社「IDEA」を主宰するデイヴィッド・オーウェン（David Owen）による小説。本書は、「IDEA」より刊行される初の文芸作品である。

「私が本を書いたとしたら、ベストセラーになるでしょうね。実際、ベストセラーというタイトルで呼ぶことにしよう。」という一文で始まる本作は、空港で見かけたり、同じ地下鉄の車両で2度見かけるような大人気の本を書こうと夢見ている「June Newton」と名付けられた実在しそうな女性が書いた物語である。「June Newton」は作者のエイリアス（偽名）であり、このキャラクターと小説は、作者がテキストを寄稿したイギリス人フォトグラファー、ナディア・リー・コーエン（Nadia Lee Cohen）による作品『HELLO MY NAME IS』から着想を得ている。本書の裏表紙には、コーエンが「June Newton」に扮したセルフ・ポートレイトが掲載されている。

「June Newton」は、地方の百貨店のフロアマネジャーとして働き、一見退屈な日々を送っているように見えるが、実際には素粒子物理学者だけが知っているような大きな出来事が毎日を満たしている。ことわざに言われるような、雨が降るばかりで十分に暑くならない地獄のような地方から抜け出せなくなっている「June」は、ニコラス・ケイジやキアヌ・リーブス、ウィノナ・ライダーとの会話を空想し、それに没頭している。そんな中、新たな展開が起こる。30年間働いてきた百貨店が閉店することとなったのだ。「キャリアを棒に振る行為だ」、「私の仕事にはほとんど必要ない」と「June」は思う。しかし、小売業界の終末論は「June」が描く物語の中で最も予想し易いものに過ぎない。「June」が書いているつもりでいる奇抜で、行き当たりばったり、そしてまた失敗を繰り返す観察記録やアイデアを綴った本は、現実世界で繰り広げられる騒々しい出来事によって追い越され、覆されていく。本作はページが進むにつれ、告白的な日記から、息もつかないスリラーへと加速していく。

本書は、「本を書くことについての本」という意味でメタ小説であるとも言えるかもしれないが、読みやすく気さくな一作である。感情的で、高揚感に溢れ、刺激的な作品で、「June Newton」自身が予想しなかった「ベストセラー」となるかもしれない一冊。
