ヴェネツィア出身のイタリア人建築家、カルロ・スカルパ（Carlo Scarpa）の作品集。本書は、作者が1961年から1963年にかけて手掛けた「クェリーニ・スタンパーリア財団（Querini Stampalia Foundation）」の地上階と庭園部分の改修プロジェクトを紹介する一冊。ヴェネツィア中心部に位置するこの歴史的建造物は、16世紀にヴェネツィアの貴族であったクエリーニ家の邸宅として建設された宮殿である。1869年にクエリーニ・スタンパーリア家の最後の当主、ジョバァンニ・クエリーニ・スタンパーリア（Giovanni Querini Stampalia）の遺志を基に財団が設立され、現在はその改修箇所を利用し、クエリーニ家のインテリアやアーカイブ、アートコレクションを収蔵する美術館として公開されている。この改修工事では、会議室や財団の庭を特徴づける豊富なディテールと素材が復元された。本書は、100点以上の記録写真とともに作者による地上階と庭園の改修設計を紹介する。

作者は、多色大理石の床から四角いコンクリートウォッシュ、上部をカットしたトラバーチンスラブ（大理石の板）からカットガラスの表面、鉄とガラスとチーク材でできた入口につながる橋、ホールと通路を隔てるイストリア石のブロックに埋め込まれた金、庭の迷路をかたどった大理石の水盤など、珍しい工夫を施している。

本書終盤では、作者による建物の内装や中庭のドローイングやスケッチの一部も収録する。

Almost ten years after the first edition, published to mark the reorganization of the Venetian palazzo, seat of the Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Electa is reprinting the book devoted to the work of Carlo Scarpa and presenting an edition in English.

More than 100 signed photographs documenting the reorganization of the ground floor and the garden of the 16th-century palazzo left by Giovanni Querini Stampalia as the seat of his foundation in Venice. The work, executed by Carlo Scarpa between 1961 and 1963, restored the wealth of detail and material which characterize the conference room and the garden of the foundation.

A repertoire of unusual solutions ranging from polychrome marble floors to the squares of washed concrete, from walls in slabs of travertine cut off at the top to the surfaces in cut glass, from the iron, glass and teak structure of the entrance bridge to the gold inserts in the block of Istrian stone separating the hall from the walkways, and the marble basin carved in the shape of a maze in the garden.
The book ends with a selection of studio drawings and sketches executed by Carlo Scarpa for the interiors and the courtyard of the building.
