コレクターであるロニー・サスーン（Ronnie Sassoon）による作品集。作者は生涯にわたりロンドン、ニューヨーク、ロサンゼルス、そしてその間の様々な場所で暮らした。その中で自身が収集してきた物の「選択（Selection）」がどのようになされてきたかという定義を明らかにするために、過激なアート作品、デザインオブジェクト、住宅群を、類を見ない形で本書にまとめている。イタリア人アーティストのルーチョ・フォンタナ（Lucio Fontana）、ピエロ・マンゾーニ（Piero Manzoni）、ミケランジェロ・ピストレット（Michelangelo Pistoletto）、アリギエロ・ボエッティ（Alighiero Boetti）ら「グループ・ゼロ（Group Zero）」や「アルテ・ポーヴェラ（Arte Povera）」といった芸術運動に属したアーティストの重要作品、イタリア人デザイナーのカルロ・スカルパ（Carlo Scarpa）やガエ・アウレンティ（Gae Aulenti）、オーストリア人デザイナーのフレデリック・キースラー（Frederick Kiesler）、フランス人デザイナーであり建築家のジャン・プルーヴェ（Jean Prouvé）といったミッドセンチュリーを代表するデザイナーの作品を含む唯一無二のコレクションである。その中心となるのは、アメリカ人建築家のリチャード・ノイトラ（Richard Neutra）によるロサンゼルスの「レヴィット邸（Levit House）」、ハンガリー人建築家のマルセル・ブロイヤー（Marcel Breuer）によるコネチカット州の「スティルマン邸II（Stillman II House）」、「ディーン＆デルーカ（DEAN&DELUCA）」の創業者が暮らしたニューヨーク・ソーホー地区の象徴的な存在である「ディーン／セグリック・ロフト（Dean/Ceglic Loft）」という3つの重要な邸宅である。この建築物はそれぞれ、デザイン史におけるその時代と場所を定義しながら、現在そこに息づくモノによっても再定義されている。作者は、「情熱と欲望を追い求めることで、最も心地よく官能的な雰囲気が生まれる。それが映画や印刷物、旅行など、夢中になるようなあらゆる過去の経験を思い起こさせる。このような記憶こそが、すばらしい逸品を追求する私たちの取捨選択に影響を与えている」と語る。
