2009年から北京を拠点とするフランス人コレクター、トーマス・サルヴィン（Thomas Sauvin）の作品集。本書は各20枚のプリントを収録した5冊組のアルバムセット。これらのネガは、北京の端にある硝酸銀を濾過するリサイクル工場から回収されたものから見つけ出されており、作者は壊される運命にあった50万本以上のネガを大量に集め、アーカイブし編集した。本書は、中国で銀塩フィルムが広く使用されるようになった1985年からデジタルに移行しはじめた2005年までの20年間にわたり、国の首都とそこで生きる人々の姿を写し出した写真が収録されている。これらの記念写真的なスナップショットは匿名かつ一般の中国人によって撮影され、それらの写真を通じてポスト社会主義の中国が生まれる瞬間を目撃することになる。

Silvermine is a set of five photo albums each containing 20 prints. The negatives were salvaged from a recycling plant on the edge of Beijing, where they had been sent to be filtered for their silver nitrate content. Between 2009 and 2013, Beijing-based collector Thomas Sauvin amassed, archived and edited more than half a million negatives destined for destruction. The Silvermine albums offer a unique photographic portrait of the Chinese capital and the lives of its inhabitants covering a period of 20 years – from 1985, when silver film came into widespread use in China, to 2005 when digital photography came to the fore. In these souvenir snapshots taken by anonymous and ordinary Chinese people, we are witnessing the birth of post-socialist China.
